Work in Progress

My second album, The Persistence of Beauty, is well into the planning stages and should be released on
OA2 Records in 2017.
The album will contain mostly original pieces along with a couple reharmonizations/arrangements.
One of the compositions, Ollie’s Mode, will be based on chord structures extrapolated from Oliver
Massiaen’s modes of limited transposition as represented in Guy Lacour’s 28 Etudes.
The size of the ensemble will range from quartet to sextet and will feature myself and Joel Frahm on saxes
and clarinet/bass clarinet, John Bailey on trumpet, Jon Hamar on bass, Gary Versace on piano/Rhodes and
Matt Wilson on drums.
I have been compiling etudes into an instructional book based on my unique approach to improvisation,
using upper-structures and common substitutions as points of departure over standard chord changes.
I compose these etudes for my students and for clinics/masterclasses using chord changes from Great
American Songbook standards to show how to take triads and expand them to structures, such as 1-2-3-5,
1-3-4-5 etc. and then pentatonics to create an inside-out approach.
